The Ocean
If you are bringing a boat, get ready for some adventure and exploring. West Beach Resort is ideally situated to explore the state park islands to the north and south. Head over to Canada and have lunch at Bedwell Harbor, or stay this side of the boarder and gaze at the exotic animals on Speiden Island. If you're looking for fishing grounds, there are many right by the resort. In fact, local fishermen in salmon derbies nearly always catch the big one right off the cliffs to the south of our resort. If you're looking for crab for dinner, our bay is one of the most productive areas for Dungeness crab in the San Juan Islands. Commercial crabbers come to our bay in the winter all the way from Bellingham to fish for crab. A 50 lb. lingcod was recently caught off the kelp bed to the north of the resort. West Beach Resort and our bay is protected from the predominantly southeast winds, so it is usually very calm and tranquil. During the summer, our customers refer to the water in President's Channel as "glass". In the evening and during the night, as you just settle in for the night, you may hear harbor seals splashing around in the water in our bay. Dahl's porpoises and salmon are also seen and heard in the evening hours.
The interactive map below is great for looking at the topography of our ocean floor. Use the functions at the bottom of the map for more details.
