Wildlife sightings include orca and minke whales, harbor seals, porpoises, dolphins, osprey, eagles and more. All tours are led by qualified, experienced guides, and are done in small groups only. You are guaranteed an intimate and special adventure. Enjoy our beautiful environment from the comfort and stability of a double kayak led by professional guides. Guided trips are offered from May through September; rentals are available all year, subject to the weather. These tours are truly spectacular, especially the sunset trip. All guided kayak tours depart West Beach Resort and are hosted by Shearwater Adventures. Call Shearwater Adventures for reservations and mention you want the Sunset Tour! Other things to do on and near the resort

Beachcombing: You can always find something interesting on our beach. Lift up a rock and you may find many different species of crab and fish, or search for color sea shells at the high tide line.

Fishing and crabbing off our pier: Rent a pole from the activities kiosk and set off for some fishing fun. You may catch shiner perch, pile perch, kelp greenling, or even a salmon or lingcod! Check out our fishing page for more info.

Fishing in our wildlife pond: We stock this pond with bluegill and largemouth bass. You are welcome to fish in the wildlife pond, but you must have barbless hooks and all fishing is strictly catch-and-release.

Sight-seeing: West Beach Resort is home to many creatures. Common sightings are bald eagles, blue herron, king fishers, osprey, jumping salmon, harbor seals, porpoises, and otter. Sometimes small sharks and skates patrol beneath our pier at night. Orca whales are also often seen cruising in front of the resort, along with the occasional minke whale.

Swimming: Although the water is chilly all year, when the tide goes all the way out and the sun has a chance to heat up the sand, the incoming tide's water can get very comfortable to swim in. Grab a blow-up raft from the kiosk and soak in the island rays.

Scuba diving and Snorkelling: The waters around our resort offer incredible natural diversity.

A couple of fantastic local pottery shops are located near the resort. The Right Place Pottery is directly across the road from the resort, and Orcas Island Pottery is just up the hill if you take a right onto West Beach Road. They have imaginative artwork, and you can even design your own pottery! Check out our links page for their website.

Whale watching: There are a couple different whale-watching outfits on the island. Visit our links page to explore these fascinating marine mammals.

In addition to the activities we offer here at the resort, there are many things to do on Orcas Island. Moran State Park is a 15-minute drive away. There you can swim in either of the four lakes or visit the world-famous Mount Constitution (spectacular on a sunny day!). If you're looking for a hiking adventure, the park has many miles of terrific hiking trails. Obstruction pass and Madrona Point also offer great hiking. The village of Eastsound, only five minutes away from West Beach, has many terrific shops and some of the best restaurants in Washington State. Visit our Links page for more activities and resources.
